Channel M&A: Focus Technology Acquires NSK To Boost Recurring Revenues And New England Footprint

Fast-growing solution provider Focus Technology Solutions has acquired managed services standout NSK in a move to boost recurring revenues and widen its footprint in the New England market.

Burlington, Mass.-based Focus Technology Solutions, ranked No. 383 on CRN's 2017 Solution Provider 500 list, will increase its headcount by 50 percent with the purchase of the Boston-based consulting firm who specializes in managed services. In 2016, NSK made CRN's MSP Pioneer 250 list of channel companies with business models weighted toward managed services with a focus on the SMB market.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bill Smeltzer, chief technology officer at Focus, said the acquisition fits the solution provider's goal of making service revenues account for 50-percent of the company's overall sales.

"We're focusing more on managed services and cloud services, so we'll be adding a lot of value there with NSK," said Smeltzer. "We're looking to grow our expertise in the security arena as well, specifically around compliance – health care compliance, financial compliance, more managed services around security … We're looking continue to increase our New England footprint."

Focus is a Dell EMC Gold partner, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Silver partner, as well as a strategic partner of Cisco, Microsoft, VMware and Symantec. The solution provider specializes in data center infrastructure, networking, advanced Microsoft solutions, converged infrastructure, data protection, security and professional services.

NSK was founded in 1995 providing services security assessments, cloud computing, project management, helpdesk support and disaster recovery.

Focus Technology is led by Doug Alexander, who spent nearly a decade at EMC in sales manager roles focusing on the New England market.

Alexander said managed IT services has become the fastest growing area of Focus' business. "We have a tremendous amount of momentum in the region right now, and we will continue to look for ways to capitalize on this to help us expand," he said.

Former NSK President Tim Lasonde will now help lead the company's managed services division. Focus Technology Solutions will have a total of 60 employees with offices in Boston, Burlington, Mass. and Nashua, N.H.
