    CRN compared financial measures from the week of August 7 with those from the week of July 10 to develop the most recent data on four-week trends. In general, this was a period of weakening financial health for many of the 11 categories CRN covers. Six categories showed deterioration in financial strength while only three categories showed stronger financial results.

To date, Hollywood studios had tied themselves up in a Gordian knot of digital rights management issues, delaying the distribution of popular movies and television episodes via broadband downloads. Meanwhile, the horse was clearly leaving the barn. According to the Motion Picture Association of America, of the $6.1 billion their studios lost to piracy last year, illegal Internet downloads accounted for $2.3 billion.
