Topping this week’s news, Lenovo is taking on Dell and HP in the server market, appointing Sammy Kinlaw to the helm of Lenovo’s North American channel sales in the Enterprise Systems group.

Kinlaw will be responsible for driving sales for the company’s newly acquired x86 server business. Lenovo is now the third largest x86 server maker, behind HP and then Dell.

Lenovo officially bought IBM’s x86 server business this week for $2.1 billion. The group’s sales goal is a revenue of $5 billion from servers by next year. Kinlaw said he will focus on SMB solution providers through distribution partners.

Microsoft unveiled its new operating system this week, surprising the channel with the name Windows 10. Microsoft’s most recent OS upgrade was the wildly unpopular windows 8.

Microsoft says Windows 10 will make the leap into the world of the Internet of Things, with the operating system running across all types of servers and devices. The user interface will look like a more blended version of Windows 7 and 8, and up to four apps will be able to run on screen simultaneously.

With the name Windows 10, Microsoft may have the intention of distancing itself from Windows 8, but the touch input will carry over from the previous OS. Microsoft says it will unveil more Windows 10 features early next year.

Big data has been one of the hottest buzzwords for years now, but a new study from Gartner shows the technologies may actually be lagging behind the hype.

Gartner’s survey showed that while 73 percent of organizations surveyed plan to invest in big data technologies, only 13 percent have actually deployed solutions.

Gartner told CRN the slow growth is likely due to the cost of implementing big data technologies, but that there is a real opportunity for VARs and the IT channel to capitalize on that. Gartner suggested companies in the channel get in front of future competitors in the market and get ahead of growth.
