Channel Beat: Intel Plots Layoffs, Apple Gets On Microsoft, Google Turf, Kaspersky Attacked

Bad news for Intel employees -- the company is reportedly planning to lay off a portion of its workforce in the upcoming month.

The Oregonian allegedly obtained an internal memo from Intel stating it will slow down hiring and cut its research and administrative budget by $300 million this year.

Intel's been hit by a sluggish PC market, and the shipments of Windows 10 this summer doesn't help.

Apple is looking to make a splash in the cloud services space, according to a report this week by Bloomberg.

The mobility giant is reportedly building a high-speed network and upgrading its data centers with its site on Microsoft and Google. Apple has traditionally relied on other network providers to support its consumer services, but will invest billions into its network and data center divisions.

And, finally, this week security vendor Kaspersky Lab discovered a security attack on its own internal systems.

Kaspersky said the new malware platform -- called Duqu 2.0 -- infiltrated several of the company’s internal systems using Microsoft software installer files. The attack focused on the company's newest technologies, as well as investigations into advanced targeted attacks. Kaspersky said there is no doubt the attackers are targeting a wide ring of victims.
