Channel Beat: Will HP Buy EMC?

A research report from Raymond James this week said now is the perfect time for HP to buy EMC.

The report said Raymond James believes an acquisition deal between HP and EMC is a ’distinct possibility’ as HP inches closer to its company split date in November. Last year,The Wall Street Journal reported that EMC held a year’s worth of merger talks with HP.

A number of partners of both companies said the deal makes sense and would be beneficial to the channel.

Twenty-year IBM veteran Tami Duncan left her North American channel chief post this week. She will be replaced by Michele Stern, who has been at IBM for 34 years.

IBM says Duncan left the company of her own will, and she received praise on the IBM PartnerWorld blog. Some partners worry the departure is further evidence of IBM’s shrinking channel footprint.

VMware and reseller partner Carahsoft will pay $75.5 million to settle a civil lawsuit alleging overcharging of the federal government for VMware products over a six-year period.

A former VMware executive filed the lawsuit after leaving VMware in 2010. The case was sealed by the Department of Justice until Tuesday. According to lawsuit allegations, VMware and Carahsoft provided inaccurate pricing, disclosures and incomplete information. VMware denied the allegations, and said it settled to avoid a long legal battle.
