Channel Beat: Data Center, IoT Keep Intel Afloat In Q2

Intel's second-quarter financial earnings beat analysts' estimates this week -- thanks largely to a booming data center and Internet-of-Things businesses.

Intel posted sales of $13.2 billion, and shares spiked nearly 8 percent in after-hours trading. Data center sales were up 10 percent year-over-year, and IoT sales were up 4 percent.

Those businesses served as a life preserver for Intel’s lagging PC business. Despite growth in those areas, Intel’s earnings fell 4.6 percent overall from the year-ago quarter.

Office 365 users in North America suffered from an extensive outage in the middle of this week's Worldwide Partner Conference this week.

Twitter reports on the outage began in the early afternoon. Users were unable to connect to the Exchange online email service, or Outlook.

Microsoft has had a few access issues with Office 365 in the past year, including with Exchange and Lync.

And, finally, it's the end of the line for Windows Server 2003. Tuesday marked the last day of support from Microsoft, and solution providers said millions of customers have not migrated from the server, leaving themselves vulnerable to security breaches.

Solution providers said Server 2003 will now be a target for hackers, and that migration services could provide big business.

In 2013, Microsoft offered an average of more than three security patches a month for 2003 users. Microsoft will no longer issue any patches. Partners said the migration process can take as long as six months.
