Microsoft, Apple, Salesforce.com -- it seems like every big tech company wants a bite out of the apple that is the health-care industry. Why are so many of these companies investing in health-care technology solutions now?

’The amount of money that’s in the industry right now, I think the question is, 'Why wouldn’t you try to get in?' ’ said Mark Dudman, senior vice president of Boston-based health-care company NaviNet.

Intel General Manager Michael Jackson agreed, saying the amount of rapid change in the industry has attracted businesses.

’The opportunity exists because of disruption,’ he said. ’There are fewer industries that are being disrupted more right now than health care.’

That doesn’t mean making money in health-care IT is easy.

’As these companies are moving in, the biggest challenge remains there are so many different parts of health care that are these islands of expertise,’ Dudman said.

Specifically, the challenge is how will companies communicate in health care and make data readily available when it’s actually needed at the point of care.

’The interoperability for meaningful workflows that go to accountable care, that’s where the challenge is,’ he said.
