Mentor relationships have always presented benefits for both sides, but with the younger generation of digital natives in the modern workplace, mentors may gain more from their younger counterparts than ever before.

Cheryl Cook, vice president of global channels and alliances at Dell, said she is a major advocate for mentoring younger employees.

’I learn things new every day from meeting with new people coming in, and I also think increasingly [the way] for us to stay in touch as we mature in our careers and our age is really touching into the millennial youth,’ Cook said at the Women of the Channel event.

She pointed out that millennials collaborate and process tasks in different ways because they grew up with the Internet, mobile devices and social media.

’I’m a big advocate of mentoring and being a mentee,’ she said.

Cook went on to talk about how important it is for men to advocate for leveraging the positions of women in the workplace as well. She discussed Dell’s involvement in the MARC strategy, which stands for Men Advocating Real Change.

’It doesn’t have to be this huge movement as much as just awareness-building,’ she said.

’It also has to kind of cascade through leadership,’ she added, and said company CEO Michael Dell is a big proponent of the program.
