The Three-Step Process To Build A Personal Brand

Building a personal and professional brand is a key requirement in this economy, but doing so can seem like a daunting task. CEO of Clark Strategic Communications Dorie Clark offered a three-step process to attendees of the Women of the Channel West conference in Napa, Calif., this week.

"When it comes to real personal branding, branding done right, it's not about what you're saying about yourself, it's actually a process," she said.

The three steps are simple: Discover your brand, create your brand and live your brand.

Clark was clear that building a brand is different from having a reputation.

"It's taking the proactive step of creating your brand, determining how you want to be seen," she said.

Most important, when it comes to your brand, actions speak louder than words.

"The things you say explicitly, that's almost the least important part of your brand," Clark told the audience.

How someone treats other people, his or her experience in leadership roles, his or her personal causes, and his or her online reputation -- all are other important parts of a brand.
