Channel Beat: Apple Plagued By Outages

Apple's cloud suffered a widespread outage this week, impacting widely used retail and backup services.

The outage started around 3:30 East Coast time, and brought down multiple services including the App Store, Apple TV, iTunes, and iPhoto. The disruption lasted more than three hours.

Apple has recently shifted about half of its cloud spend from AWS to Google Cloud Platform.

Despite declining tablet sales this year, research firm IDC expects a bounce-back in 2018.

According to IDC, the market is expected to see a slight rebound in 2018, thanks in part to growth in detachable tablets.

Detachables currently account for 16 percent of the overall market. In 2020, the category is expected to account for 31 percent.

Many manufacturers have followed Microsoft's lead into the market, including Apple and Samsung.

Verizon's 36,000 striking union employees came to an agreement with the carrier to end the standoff this week.

Employees returned to their jobs Wednesday, after two months of picketing over career packages and overseas labor.

Partners say Verizon will continue to shift its priorities to its wireless services, and many of the striking workers belonged to the wireline business unit.
