Rise of Rack PDUs: Market Opportunity Is Promising for Eaton and Partners

Curtiz Gangi, sales VP for U.S. channel midmarket in Eaton's data center business, says partners are moving from the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to rack Power Distribution Units (PDUs) because of the need for more power and more efficiency, too.

Gangi said that three to four years ago, companies were backing up their servers with UPS devices, but now, they simply need more power. "The server market is going down by double digits right now, and it is impacting us more and more," said Gangi.

With the rack PDU market virtually on fire right now, companies are moving away from the power strip, which, according to Gangi, has "little intelligence."

"Everyone is moving towards more connected devices, like PDUs," he explained. "With this technology, you can measure the power consumption. It is truly an intelligent choice for customers."

Gangi continued: "What's great here is that we are able to work on developing the infrastructure itself, in addition to making the PDUs available to our partners."

The goal for Eaton is to involve as many partners as possible in this growing market opportunity. They are also tapping into the new market of DAS (Digital Antenna Systems) for solution providers.

"We really aim to evolve our partners understanding of where the power market is today," Gangi said. "We want them to be involved, we want them to join us on this."
