Apple is set to up the ante in the intensely competitive smartphone wars with a souped-up next generation iPhone.
The website MacRumors.com is reporting that iPhone developer Pandav has the next generation iPhone, referred to as iPhone 3.1, on their app analytics radar screen.
MacRumors says Pandav has "spotted usage records" for the next generation iPhone 3.1 for iBART, a free app guide for the popular San Francisco Bay area BART public transportation system.
This is the first time that a reference to the next generation iPhone 3.1 in a public log. It's not the first time that a public log siting has provided a heads up for a new iPhone.
When Apple began testing its hot-selling iPhone 3GS it showed in public logs about eight months before its official release date.
Another sign of the next generation iPhone has come from the AppleInsider.com website which is reporting a new job listing from from Apple for "a software engineer to work on the iPhone Maps application."
There have been few details about the next generation iPhone, but there has been widespread speculation that it will feature a multicore processor which would significantly speed up application and internet performance.
There has also been widespread rumors that AT&T is set to lose it exclusive deal in the US as the sole iPhone carrier.
AT&T's spotty service has been an issue for a number of iPhone users that have abandoned the platform in favor of another carrier like Verizon.
Verizon, in fact, has waged a highly visible advertising campaign attacking what some see as AT&T's spotty cellular service.
Both Apple and AT&T have countered with ads defending the AT&T service.
