Will Users Do Backflips For Motorola's Android-based Phone On AT&T's Network?

Beginning March 7, AT&T will offer its first of five Android-based smartphones: the Motorola Backflip, which will run on AT&T's 3G network.

AT&T is the third of the top four U.S. providers to sell Motorola Android phones. Motorola last year reorganized its business to concentrate on its mobile business, and, after some cost-cutting, made a profit in the third quarter of 2009.

The company, which seemed unstoppable due to the phenomenal popularity of its Razr cell phone that it introduced in 2004, has struggled to develop a follow-up act. It is hoping the Droid and the Cliq will give Apple's iPhone, also sold through AT&T, a run for its money. This week, Google announced that manufacturers are shipping more than 60,000 Android handsets daily.

The Backflip has reverse-flip screen design, as well as a mini-QWERTY keyboard. The device lets users users sync their social networks with phone numbers, email and photos. The company's Motoblur technology syncs Facebook, MySpace and Twitter with phone book and email contacts, while threading status updates and profile pics through calls, messages and the address book, according to Motorola. From the home screen, users can update their status to Facebook, MySpace and Twitter at once.

The phone will cost $99.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a two-year service agreement.
