Palm Reportedly Set To Update Pre, Pixi WebOS

Looks like Palm is getting ready to release its webOS 1.4 updates for Palm Pre and Palm Pixi later today. A number of Web sites have reported that the update is set to be released over-the-air sometime tonight. Precentral.net is reporting that some GSM Pre owners already have the new OS.

A number of sites are reporting that the update will have the expected bug fixes but will also add video capturing and editing, the ability to send videos over MMS, an improved call log, and support for Adobe Flash 10 (Pre only). Among the fixes: The time zone and the random browser formatting bugs have been addressed and the network time sync bug has been fixed to reflect accurate network time.

Media Sync is no longer available from the plugged-into-USB options. There is a question, however, about whether the icon has just vanished or the underlying programming has been removed by Palm. Although the disappearance is not a surprise because the iTunes sync hasn't worked for months, those using older versions of iTunes were still able to sync their phones with Apple's online music store.

In addition, Blink Notifications will now come enabled; previously the feature needed to be downloaded. Further, users can now export contacts from the Palm Pixi address book to any other device. That means that users will be able to transfer that information both from and to a Pixi.

Palm is facing stiff competition in the smartphone segment, not only from Apple's iPhone, but also Motorola's Droid. Yesterday, Palm lowered its guidance for its current fiscal quarter because of slower-than-expected smartphone sales -- just a few days after Gartner reported strong growth in that overall market.
