Apple has updated its MacBook portable PC line with a 10-hour battery life and a new NVIDIA graphics controller which promises faster performance for games and video.

The new MacBook is based on a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and comes with a 13.3-inch environmentally-friendly screen, 2 GB of system memory, and a 250-GB or 500-GB hard drive.

It also includes a new lithium-polymer battery that provides up to 10 hours of use with a single charge. A combination of new battery chemistry and what Apple calls “adaptive charging technology” also means the battery can be recharged up to 1,000 times, or about three times more than typical notebook batteries which, according to Apple means fewer batteries wind up in the environment.

Also new in the MacBook is NVIDIA’s GeForce 320M graphics processor, which Apple said has performance increases of up to 80 percent over the previous graphics processor it used.

According to the tech Website Notebookcheck, the GeForce 320M is an integrated chipset graphics card for Core 2 Duo based laptops. Instead of dedicated graphics memory, it shares the notebook’s main memory, and so performance is not as high as those processors with dedicated graphics RAM. However, Notebookcheck wrote, it should work fine with older games, but newer more demanding games may need to be run at low resolution.

It also includes Apple’s new Multitouch trackpad which, unlike the typical PC trackpad, has such capabilities as scrolling, browsing forward and backward in the Internet, resizing photos, and rotating documents, all by different finger combinations.

The new MacBook is priced at $999.
