More Apple iPad 2 Rumors: Smaller Form Factor, Flat Back, And Stronger Speaker

Apple's second-generation iPad will have the same size display as its precedessor, but be 3mm physically smaller overall, with a narrower bezel. That's the latest in a recent series of iPad 2 rumors, this time from a Japan-based Apple blog called MacOtakara, which cited an "anonymous Chinese source" for its information.

MacOtakara on Thursday reported that iPad 2 will measure 239mm by 186mm, slightly smaller than the 242.8mm by 189.7mm measuresments of the current iPad. MacOtakara also writes that the back surface of the second iPad will be flat, as opposed to the current iPad's curved back, and that the iPad's Ambient Light Sensor will now be located at the "upper center of the rear panel."

The iPad 2 may be in for a speaker upgrade as well; MacOtakara mentions a "large wide-ranged speaker unit covered with metal mesh."

Apple iPad rumors have been heating up in recent weeks as speculation moves to a potential upgrade for Apple's tablet blockbuster in the new year. Such a move would keep with Apple tradition of upgrading its flagship products on an annual basis.

Earlier this month, Reuters cited "people familiar with the situation" as saying that a number of Asian suppliers were preparing for a new round of iPad production in the first quarter of 2011. Some of Reuters' sources said the iPad 2 would have two cameras, one on the front and one in the rear, and would be slimmer and lighter than the iPad, with higher resolution display.

The MacOtakara blog also reported that iPad 2 production is already underway, with ship dates of mid to late January.
