And according to Box, the number of TouchPad users downloading the Box app has actually increased since HP announced last week that it would pull the plug on the TouchPad less than seven weeks since it had been on the market.

"We're absolutely still offering 50 GB of free cloud storage to all TouchPad owners, and not surprisingly, we've seen a significant spike in signups through the Box for TouchPad app in the past few days, bringing total app downloads to 30,000," a Box spokesperson said in an e-mail to CRN Wednesday.

The increase in Box for TouchPad downloads may be attributed to the HP TouchPad tablet fire sale that dropped the price of the TouchPad to as low as $99 after HP announced that it was killing the device.

Additionally, TouchPad users who sign up for the free 50 GB of Box cloud storage will retain that amount of storage for the life of their Box account, not just the life of the TouchPad device.

"Because our goal is to make accessing and sharing content simple across all devices, these [TouchPad] users will benefit from our 50 GB offer across the many mobile operating systems we support, including Box apps for iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Playbook, and our HTML5 mobile web app," the Box spokesperson said.

When the HP TouchPad launched on July 1, Box launched the Box for TouchPad application for download. And as a part of that, Box launched a promotion that gave TouchPad users who download the Box app 50 GB of free cloud storage for the life of the Box account.

At the time, HP Personal Systems Group (PSG) Executive Vice President Todd Bradley said in a statement that the Box app and the free cloud storage offer were part of HP's enterprise push with the TouchPad tablet.

"Offering the Box app for TouchPad with an impressive amount of free storage and secure content sharing is an integral part of our mission to build a truly capable enterprise tablet," Bradley said.

A 50-GB lifetime Box account typically costs on average $20 per month.

"The 50 GB offer is available for individuals who purchase the HP TouchPad and sign up for Box," the company wrote in a blog post about its free cloud storage offer. "Existing Box users with a Personal 5 GB account will be automatically upgraded to 50 GB of free storage upon installing the app."
