Joyent Grows Global Cloud With $85 Million Funding

Cloud software and services player Joyent has snagged $85 million in venture funding that the company says it will use to build out a global network of public clouds.

The $85 million funding round was headed by European investment firm Weather Investment II with participation from Telefonica Digital, the growth arm of telecom leader Telefonica, which is placing big bets on cloud-based services in its new Digital unit for which it will turn to Joyent.

That massive cash infusion will give Joyent, which was founded in 2004, the funds to bulk up its cloud product offerings and foster innovation into the new year, in which the company said that it "will roll out a collection of seamlessly connected high performance public clouds that serve global corporations with consistent computing services on every continent."

"Having worked with customers around the world, we see the demand for consistent global services regardless of how many countries our customers are operating in," said David Young, CEO and founder of Joyent, in a statement. "This funding will enable Joyent to build out a global compute offering to assist customers in expanding consistent software, support and services to their clients."

Joyent targets enterprises and developers with its software that lets users run their own clouds. With the company’s infrastructure stack, dubbed SmartDataCenter, Joyent gives organizations the keys to drive their own public clouds via a complete software stack and a growing set of services.

San Francisco-based Joyent offers cloud solutions to both enterprise and developers. The company targets both the public and the private cloud markets offering public cloud services and software that lets businesses stand up and run their own clouds, whether public or private, via its infrastructure stack SmartDataCenter.

The $85 million purse comes after Joyent raised $15 million in September 2010 and a year later added another $5 million to that, putting its total at more than $100 million.
