VMware continued its acquisition spree Tuesday by acquiring Log Insight, an analytics and log management product developed by little-known Mountain View, Calif.-based vendor Pattern Insight. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

In a blog post announcing the acquisition, Spiros Xanthos, CEO and co-founder of Pattern Insight, said Log Insight's technology will help VMware respond quickly to performance issues that arise in virtual and cloud environments.

"Log Insight combines technology and has the ability to analyze vast amounts of machine-generated data in real time and lead administrators to the root cause of problems very quickly," Xanthos said in the blog post. "Furthermore, it can provide insights on emerging trends and hidden patterns revealing issues before they even manifest."

VMware is acquiring both the technology and the team that developed Log Insight, according to Pattern Insight, which did not specify how many of its employees will be joining VMware.

Pattern Insight also makes Code Assurance, a source code analysis tool for detecting previously fixed bugs that evade detection during the quality assurance process.

Pattern Insight was founded in 2006 by its current CTO, Yuanyuan “YY” Zhou, who at the time was a computer science professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Xanthos and several members of the Pattern Insight's research team graduated from the university's computer science program.

VMware, which sees big data analytics as an enabling technology for cloud computing, added to its portfolio in April by acquiring Cetas Software, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based startup that handles online analytics applications, IT operations analytics and enterprise big data.
