Dell on Tuesday said it is working with Morphlabs, a developer of a converged infrastructure platform, to provide customers with the first turnkey solution for building private clouds using OpenStack software.

The new mCloud Helix solution combines Dell blade servers, OpenStack software, Dell's Crowbar cloud software framework, mCloud technology from Manhattan Beach, Calif.-based Morphlabs, and 24/7 remote management and support services from both vendors into a ready-to-use Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) platform for private clouds, said Joseph George, Dell's director of cloud and big data solutions.

"Together, we are delivering the smallest form factor and the most highly-integrated private cloud platform to the market today," George said.

The mCloud Helix solution was unveiled at the OpenStack Design Summit in San Diego.

Dell and Morphlabs in March first unveiled a partnership to develop an end-to-end SSD-based cloud platform that includes Dell PowerEdge C blade servers, networking technology from Arista Networks, NAS/SAN storage software from developer Nexenta Systems and a variety of open-source software.

That partnership has culminated in the mCloud Helix solution, which includes the Dell PowerEdge C6220 server blades with SSDs, the OpenStack cloud software, Crowbar, Morphlabs software and services that support up to 80 virtual CPUs and 3 TB of storage in a 2U C6220 chassis that uses under 700 watts of power, George said.

The solution takes advantage of Dell's work with the Chef open-source system integration framework built specifically for automating the cloud from Seattle-based Opscode, he said.

"With Chef, you can go from bare metal to a six-node private cloud within 30 minutes," he said.

With the unveiling of the solution, Morphlabs also becomes the first partner to join Dell's new Emerging Solutions Platform Partner program. The program, which Dell officially unveiled on Tuesday, is aimed at potential vendor partners that are looking to quickly build a private cloud solution, George said.

The mCloud Helix solution is the first integrated hardware-software solution for building private clouds based on the OpenStack software, said Winston Damarillo, Morphlabs CEO.
