Oracle on Tuesday launched a cloud infrastructure as a service that companies can manage on-premise in their own private cloud.
Oracle CEO Larry Ellison first announced the cloud service, called Oracle Infrastructure as a Service (Oracle IaaS) with Capacity on Demand, Oct. 1 at the Oracle OpenWorld conference in San Francisco.
"True cloud means we have to own the infrastructure, we have to manage the infrastructure, [and] we have to upgrade the infrastructure," Ellison said when the service was announce at the conference.

The Oracle cloud infrastructure service will allow businesses for a monthly fee to deploy to a cloud environment, Oracle Exadata Database Machine, Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, Oracle SPARC SuperCluster, Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine and Oracle Sun ZFS Storage Appliance.
Businesses can use the cloud service to manage these systems in their data centers behind their firewall. Details were released in a data sheet on Oracle's website.
"For the first time, customers can get the unmatched performance, scalability and reliability of Oracle Engineered Systems deployed on premise, behind their firewall, for a monthly fee," Juan Loaiza, Oracle's senior vice president for software development, said in a statement. Oracle officials could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
The Oracle IaaS will include compute capacity on-demand, which allows customers to provision capacity for their server workloads.
Also included in the release is Oracle PlatinumPlus Services, which offer quarterly analysis and advice from Oracle experts to evaluate system performance, security compliance and system availability, as well as guidance on how to resolve outstanding issues.
