Flush With Fresh Funding, Big Data Startup CloudPhysics Hires CEO

Jeff Hausman

CloudPhysics, a big data startup founded by former VMware employees, said Tuesday it hired former Symantec and Hewlett-Packard executive Jeff Hausman to be its CEO.

Hausman joins CloudPhysics from Symantec, where he spent the past two-plus years as senior vice president of its $1 billion Information Availability and Intelligence unit.

Existing CloudPhysics CEO John Blumenthal, who co-founded the Mountain View, Calif.-based startup in 2011, is moving into the role of vice president of product management.

Hausman and Blumenthal were both with storage vendor Veritas when Symantec acquired it for $13.5 billion in 2005.

CloudPhysics gathers billions of samples of anonymized operational data from its worldwide customer base every day and uses it to identify potential problems in their virtual server, storage and networking environments.

By analyzing all this data and making it available as a software-as-a-service offering, CloudPhysics aims to reduce the human error that often causes problems in the data center.

With plenty of experience in storage and security, Hausman has seen firsthand what can go wrong when infrastructure isn't configured correctly. He said in a blog post that CloudPhysics' ability to prevent these issues is what attracted him to the CEO job.

"I’ve seen firsthand how operations teams grapple with performance in virtualized environments with multi-tier applications running a variety of technologies," Hausman said in the blog post. "The ability to pinpoint performance bottlenecks, whether storage, network, server or application code, is an ongoing challenge."

CloudPhysics last month landed a $15 million Series C funding round led by Jafco Ventures, with participation from existing investors Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Mayfield. It has raised a total of $27.5 million to date.

Diane Greene and Mendel Rosenblum, who co-founded VMware and are now angel investors, have also taken a stake in CloudPhysics.
