Canon Readies New Scanner Devices

The Lake Success, N.Y.-based printer and document company released the DR-5010C and DR-2580C scanner models,designed for the production scanning and workgroup document imaging segments, respectively.

The units are slated for availability in the second quarter, according to Canon.

Canon priced the DR-2580C color document scanner at $1,095; the system includes a Straight Path document feeding system and can scan thick documents, plastic cards and other nonstandard formats. It was built with what Canon says are "user-definable" single touch "scan-to" buttons for document management. The system scans at 25 ppm.

The DR-5010C is priced at $5,495 and will include "three-line sensor" technology for high-speed and quality scanning; high-speed text enhancement capability; and custom color dropout and enhancement features, according to Canon. It scans at 50 ppm.

Canon is battling it out in a hotly contested space against vendors such as Xerox, Stamford, Conn., and Ricoh, West Caldwell, N.J., which are focusing on the increasingly converged office automation and PC-based IT space. Later this week, Xerox is expected to launch a lineup of multifunction devices at an event in San Francisco.
