Gateway’s All-In-One PC, The Sixth Time Around

As it rolls out the sixth iteration of its all-in-one PC, Gateway says it is bolstered by solution providers who believe it now fully attacks business problems it didn’t squarely cover before.

The Irvine, Calif.-based computer company has released its Profile 6 all-in-one system, which integrates an LCD monitor and speakers into a slimmed-down desktop form factor. “What we see is kind of new and exciting,” said David Omlor, CEO of QLan, a Laguna Hills, Calif.-based solution provider and Gateway channel partner. “More standard components are being integrated into the product. There are fewer proprietary notebookish components.” That, he said, makes the systems easier to service because of the standardization.

According to Gateway, the all-in-ones can be serviced largely without tools—including replacement of optical or floppy drives. The company says it also has provided for easy replacement of the LCD in the systems.

“It’s never going to be equal to a tower,” Omlor said. “[But] it’s an easy fit in professional offices, where people want to keep a very high-profile look, or executive offices where they have a reception area and don’t want the clutter of [standard PC] boxes. It’s also worked in point-of-sale locations.”

Previous versions of the all-in-one were not as flexible or based on standard, building-block components, Omlor said—a factor that may have limited sales.

The new systems are capable of having a PCIX video card added on to provide for dual-monitor capability in some configurations. That, Omlor said, could be a selling point in accounts where additional viewing capacity is sought and customers don’t wish to be locked into a single display.

Gateway said the systems will start shipping this month, with a starting configuration street price of $1,199 for a 17-inch LCD. The systems will be based on the Intel Pentium 4 or dual-core processors, with an 80 Gbyte hard drive. Wireless configurations of the Profile 6 also are an option, the company said. Gateway, which is in the midst of a search for a new CEO, also is shipping the new business all-in-one PCs as the company tries to beef up its performance in the commercial PC market.
