GovernmentVAR Product of the Week: Mobile Edge Manager

As RFID gains traction in military and health care for supply chain management, government customers want to maintain tight control over inventory. Given that, Blue Vector Systems released its Mobile Edge Manager appliance, which incorporates wireless cellular data and WiFi network access to any RFID reader, enabling data integration, local business logic processing, and over-the-air reconfiguration.

Smaller than a tablet PC and weighing less than two pounds, the appliance manages industrial sensors as well as all major UHF, HF, semi-active, and active RFID readers through a Web interface, allowing users to execute inventory and asset management business rules that can reference and update data from enterprise applications, including SAP and Oracle. Those rules cache only significant events, not raw sensor data, which conserves WAN bandwidth and reduces communications costs.

The Blue Vector Mobile Edge Manager includes global positioning capabilities to support business rules that vary by location, and automatic device health monitoring to ensure functionality. A self-contained battery backup allows the appliance to operate for extended periods without external power.
