Panasonic plans to begin shipping a rugged computer that fits in a standard Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) cargo pocket by the beginning of 2008, said Rance Poehler, president of Panasonic Computer Solutions Company, during a session at the "Leading the Way in Wireless Government" conference in Washington, D.C., Tuesday morning.
Showing a mock-up to attendees, Poehler said the new device will come equipped with an lntel low-power processor that powers a fully functional operating system.
"This will be a computer in your pocket," he told government attendees.
The Low Power on Intel Architecture enables production of very low-power chips for mobile platforms and small-form factor devices.
Panasonic is currently finalizing the specifications for the new device, but plans to include support for WAN and LAN, GPS, Bluetooth, a bright display and fully rugged capabilities to meet the needs of military Department of Defense.
