The blogosphere was on fire Thursday as rumors circulated that Apple is set to introduce an $800 MacBook when the company launches a new line of laptops.
Duncan Riley, a blogger on the Web site The Inquisitr, said he exclusively got the dirt from "a source we would categorize as reliable, would have access to such information, and who has been accurate in the past."
Apple could not be reached for comment and is not likely to talk, as its company policy is that it doesn't respond to rumors or speculation.
According to Riley, Apple retail stores have reportedly been handed price sheets that detail 12 price points for the new laptops, with prices ranging from $800 to $3,100. If the rumors are true, it would mark the first Apple laptop to retail for less than $1,000. A new $800 MacBook would mean a $300 decrease from the cheapest MacBook now available.
Typically, retail outlets get Apple price lists 10 days prior to product launches, the source told Riley.
Apple may also be seeking a consumer-friendly product that could appeal to penny-pinching consumers in the current harsh economic climate.
The latest unsubstantiated talk comes after another rumor floating on the blogosphere that Apple will launch a special media event on Oct. 14 to introduce new notebooks. Some Apple bloggers have questioned the likelihood of such as event, as invites have not yet been issued.
