Longtime ViewSonic Channel Chief Has New Role

Jeff Volpe has been made vice president and general manager of ViewSonic North America, ChannelWeb has learned.

The change was effective Dec. 1, 2008, meaning Volpe, a 20-year channel veteran, has transitioned out of his role as vice president of global brand and emerging technologies -- a position he held for about a year following more than a decade of other executive positions at the display vendor.

The transition puts Volpe in charge of ViewSonic's North American operations, including business planning, channel distribution development, brand marketing and product marketing for the region. He reports to ViewSonic founder, Chairman and CEO James Chu.

"Our team of channel sales management will remain intact," Volpe said in an interview with ChannelWeb. "We've already started ways in which we're going to leverage these economic times as an opportunity to help ViewSonic and get our partners through."

ViewSonic hopes to maintain its healthy focus on solution provider channels, Volpe assured, citing the number of enhancements to ViewSonic's display, digital signage and projector lines from the past year. ViewSonic also recently launched a new global Web site that includes new search capabilities to help users locate products faster, as well as social media features and a video library. The company is expected to make additional new product announcements in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

As for ViewSonic's channel chief, Volpe said the role now belongs to Vice President of Sales Brian Igoe, who joined ViewSonic in 1995 and was previously vice president of its consumer products division and manager of the Northeast and North Central sales divisions.

"But when you're a ViewSonic executive, you'd better be a channel chief always," Volpe insisted. "At this point, there's no question that ViewSonic is a channel advocate. I may relinquish the role of [channel chief] officially, but it's not like I'm stepping away. By being successful through the channel, we've generated a sense of focus. And we're not going to sit idly by and let economic times dictate our success, either."
