Toshiba Wednesday at CES unveiled plans for a new television powered by the same high-performance microchip used in Sony's PlayStation 3 console.

According to Reuters, the televisions will run on the Cell, chips originally developed by IBM, Toshiba and Sony. Cell-enabled TVs will be able to show as many as 48 separate moving pictures on a single TV screen, with high-definition graphics to boot. The Japanese electronics manufacturer has not yet revealed price points.

Another Toshiba CES announcement concerned new TVs that will use Yahoo, Intel and Microsoft technology to access content from the Web. Toshiba will integrate the Yahoo and Intel-developed Widget Channel applications framework and also Extender for Microsoft's Windows Media Center into LCD TVs, LCD TV/DVD combos and a stand-alone network player, according to a Toshiba press release.

"Intel's consumer electronics platform, including the Intel Media Processor CE 3100 and Widget Channel, provide performance, flexibility and Internet compatibility, which help Toshiba to develop a new generation of connected devices," said Eric Kim, senior vice president and general manager for Intel's Digital Home Group, in a statement. "These new services will extend the Internet into the TV viewing experience and transform the way consumers enjoy personal entertainment."

Toshiba will bring the products to the U.S. market in the second half of 2009, the company stated.

Other Toshiba announcements at CES included a range of new portable DVD players, DVD recorders, and a new line of Regza LCD TVs set to debut in April and May. Some Regzas will have invisible speakers, Toshiba said, and also an autoview feature that adjusts picture parameters automatically.
