Lexmark Readies Release Of Web-connected Printers For SMBs

Just three weeks after Hewlett-Packard unveiled Web-connected printers, Lexmark Monday said that it is prepping its own rollout of three all-in-one (AIO) printers with the same capabilities.

The companies, however, are targeting different markets. While HP is targeting consumers with the HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web, Lexmark is taking aim at SMBs.

The company also is rolling out five other AIO inkjet printers. All products are slated for release in September and range in price from $199 to $399.

Lexmark did not provide many details about the Web-connected printers. The Lexington, Ky.-based company did say that the products will have an RSS feed, allowing users to access business, weather, sports and news, or connect to a company intranet via a touch screen and e-mail the contents directly from the AIO.

All eight printers are wireless and include Wireless-N (IEEE 802.11n) for customers who need longer range and more reliable signals for faster file transfer rates.

The printers feature the company's myTouch 4.3-inch touch screen with SmartSolutions technology. SmartSolutions technology enables one-touch 'customizations' or unique workflows that are intended to eliminate repetitive tasks.

Other features include shortcuts and workflows; ID card copy and Vizix ink technology. Another feature is business card scan, which automatically uploads contact information to address book apps such as Microsoft Outlook, Windows CE or Palm OSTM.

"This new line of AIOs enables SMBs to be more efficient and save money in today's economic environment," said Paul Rooke, Lexmark executive vice president and president of the company's Imaging Solutions Division, in a statement.
