HP Unveils First Touchscreen Netbook And More At CES

On the netbook front, HP leads off with the HP Mini 5102, which is available in both standard screen and touch-enabled versions. It's powered by an Intel Atom N450 processor and has 10.1-inch LED display with a 95 percent of full-size keyboard. The HP Mini 5102 will be available for $399 later this month.

The HP Mini 210, priced at $299 with Microsoft Windows 7, and the $329 HP Mini 2102 round out the new netbooks from HP. Both were available Wednesday.

A more hefty new mobile PC from HP, the TouchSmart tm2 is a touch-enabled notebook that goes on sale in the U.S. on Jan. 17 and will be priced at $949. Built on low-voltage Intel Core 2 Duo processors and with an option for ATI Mobility Radeon discrete graphics from Advanced Micro Devices, the HP TouchSmart tm2 is an update on the TouchSmart tx2 featuring several new touch applications.

HP is also introducing a few packages and products around its new notebooks that are targeted at students, including the HP Student Edition backpack with a notebook compartment. Other new mobile products introduced Wednesday include a new notebook docking station and a power adapter plug that lets HP Mini owners charge their netbooks in the car.

Moving to the SMB and enterprise markets, HP on Wednesday introduced several new desktop PCs, notebooks and displays tailored for business users. Whereas touch is clearly a recurring theme in HP's most recent consumer-targeted products, energy efficiency and environmental friendliness are the key selling points for the newest business offerings.

Wednesday's lineup highlighted a couple of desktops, the HP Compaq 8000f Elite Ultra Slim Desktop PC and the HP Z200 Workstation. The former is 30 percent more energy efficient than its predecessors, according to HP, and is available along with the new HP Compaq 8100 Elite Desktop PC on Feb. 1. Both the Compaq 8000f and Compaq 8100 start at $849.

The HP Z200 is being billed by HP as a more affordable member of its Z Series lineup. It's got options for dual-core or quad-core processors from Intel and will start at $769 when it is made available in February.

On the mobile side, new HP business notebook offerings include HP EliteBook and HP ProBook b-series products priced at $1,299 and $1,099, respectively, which are also slated for February availability. Sizes range from 14-inch to 15.6-inch and these products feature the usual range of HP-developed software applications.
