Leaked Specifications For Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 Card Emerge

Nvidia on Monday posted specifications related to the new GeForce GTX 580 graphics card on its Website, and then removed them a short time later -- suggesting their appearance was a mistake in the first place.

According to screenshots of the leaked specification sheets, the GTX 580 includes 512 CUDA stream processing units and 2GB of DDR5 memory on a 40-nm die. CUDA, which stands for Compute Unified Design Architecture, is the official term for Nvidia's Fermi architecture, which provides the basis for parallel processing efforts to expand the applicability of visualization technology in various industries.

Though further technical details were not included in the leak, according to rumors published by Softpedia, the GTX 580 includes 128 texturing units and a wider 512-bit memory bus, both of which are improvements on the GF 110 core.

The incident comes just a few days after rival AMD released its second generation DirectX 11 HD Radeon 6850 and 6870 cards, the first not to bear the ATI brand name, after a prolonged hiatus. New details concerning Nvidia's upcoming GeForce GTX 580 card divert attention from AMD's offering.

The GeForce GTX 580 appeared on a list of graphics cards that support the Nvidia's 3D Vision technology, which the company officially made available on Tuesday even though Nvidia has yet to unveil its powerful new card.

Next: Competition With AMD

The GTX 580 will likely compete with AMD's high-end 6900 card, code-named Cayman, according to rumors published last week.

Nvidia has yet to offer a release date for the GTX 580, though it is widely expected to be available in time for the holiday shopping season.
