Nvidia continues to explore the possibilities of GPU-based computing in the enterprise space. With Wednesday's launch of the NVS 300 graphics processor, Nvidia is taking aim at mission-ciritical applications including control centers and digital signage installations.
Nvidia says the NVS 300 can power up to eight displays at resolutions of up to 2560x1600, while improving power efficiency. The NVS 300 is able to adjust the level of power and performance required based on the application in use.
“The NVS 300 is built for demanding enterprises that require high reliability, improved manageability, and tremendous value,” Jeff Brown, general manager of Nvidia's Professional Solutions Group, said in a statement describing the NVS 300. “The ability to support legacy and current display types provides an upgrade path without disrupting existing, complex installations.”
The NVS 300 includes support for VGA, DVI, DisplayPort and HDMI, according to the statement. The card can be configured for PCI Express and is EnergyStar compliant. It comes with Nvidia Mosaic technology, which offers taskbar spanning and application scaling and supports multidisplay capability. End users will be able to run the NVS 300 on Nvidia's new nView Desktop Management software.
The NVS 300 is available for a standard retail price of $149 MSRP, USD from OEMs and authorized partners.
Quadro is Nvidia's product family for the enterprise space, based on Nvidia's Fermi architecture for parallel processing and high-performance GPU computing. In October, Nvidia released the Quadro 2000 and Quadro 600cards for high-end and entry-level users respectively.
Although the NVS 300 runs on Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system, Nvidia in April launched the Quadro FX 4800 processor for Apple's Mac platform, and last month it began offering its Quadro 4000 series GPUs to Mac Pro users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
