SSI Forum Releases Micro Module Server Specification
SSI, an industry trade group headquartered in San Ramon, Calif., collaborated with Quanta, Tyan, and Intel on the new server form factor standard. In a joint statement, executives from Quanta and Tyan said the Micro Module Server Specification emphasizes power-efficiency and cost reduction, while SSI Forum's chairman said it offers value for its price as well as a variety of form factors.
“This is unlike anything we have ever done as an organization, but it is our intention to continue expanding the scope of the SWG to ensure that we deliver best-in-class value to the server industry,” said Jim Ryan, chairman of the SSI Forum, in a statement. “The SWG has identified micro servers as a growing market, and we are pleased to provide the industry with innovative solutions that enable multiple form factors.”
Micro servers are usually entry-level systems, with one socket, that offer low power consumption to enterprise customers. In addition, micro servers include better density and allow resources to be shared more efficiently, making them ideal Web servers.
Micro Module Server Specification Version 1.0 will help accelerate the time-to-market for micro server products, according to the SSI Forum? In order to get more micro server vendors to adopt the specification, SSI Forum intends to promote the technology throughout the industry, according to a statement.
The Micro Module Server Specification Version 1.0 is available now to all SSI Forum members, as well as non-members who request an evaluation copy.
