Micron Technology, an Idaho-based manufacturer of DRAM and other memory solutions, has tapped Mark Durcan to assume the responsibilities of former CEO Steve Appleton, who died suddenly in a plane crash Friday at the age of 51.

Durcan has served as Micron’s president and COO since 2007, and has been with the company since 1984. In addition to taking on his new role as CEO, Durcan will serve as a director on the company’s board.

"We are deeply saddened by Steve's loss and will miss his hand at the helm,” Durcan said in a statement. “I have provided the Board my ongoing commitment to work with the management team and continue to move the company forward."

Just last month Durcan announced his plans to retire in late August of this year. In a statement emailed to CRN, Micron stated that Durcan will not be retiring this summer and will be the company's "moving forward."

Micron’s board of directors also announced the appointment of director Robert Switz as chairman of the board and Mark Adams as president. Switz, who has served as a director since 2006, previously served as chair of the Micron board's Audit and Governance committees, and is the former chairman and CEO of ADC Telecommunications.

Adams, Micron’s new president, joined the company in 2006 and served most recently as Vice President of Worldwide Sales. Micron said that Adams will continue to oversee worldwide sales in his new role.

"We are fortunate to be able to appoint someone with Mark's operations and technical leadership experience to serve as the company's CEO," said Mr. Switz in a statement. "Mark has been instrumental in Micron's success in his role as President and COO and has garnered the respect of the company, his team members and the industry at large."
