AMD is offering a select set of products from the Opteron family with an extended standard availability period of five years, the Sunnyvale, Calif., company announced at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco. The program is meant to provide customers with product and pricing stability, as well as professional support.

AMD is hoping to broaden use of its chips in embedded devices, such as telecommunications servers, storage systems, and digital imaging.

The first processors to be made available under the new program are the AMD Opteron processor Models 852 and 252, which are scheduled to ship this quarter. The Model 852 is priced at $1,514 in 1,000-unit quantities, and the Model 252 costs $851 in the same quantities. The AMD Opteron Model 152, used in single-processor workstations and entry-level servers, is scheduled to ship in April, with prices starting at $637 in 1,000-unit quantities.
