What's The Reason For Poor Internet Performance In North America?

Mobility, the Internet of Thingsand cloud computing are just a few hot technologies on the market now, but none of these innovations is possible without the peak performance of one thing: the Internet.

Internet performance can be easy to take for granted until the wireless goes down in the middle of a huge sales presentation. It may be the foundation for all off-premise and networking technology, but there’s nothing simple about the Internet, even in North America.

Kyle York, chief marketing officer at Manchester, N.H.-based Internet performance specialist Dyn, attributes some of the issues around Internet performance in North America to the broad number of ISPs, especially across the U.S. That means expectations for Internet performance can vary widely depending on the provider and region a user is in. But that’s not the only challenge.

’Internet connectivity is very complicated. It’s getting more and more complicated as more users are on mobile devices,’ York said.

Users are entitled to have a ’commonality’ of expectations across Internet performance, he said, whether they are surfing the Web on a FIOS-connected laptop or streaming Netflix over Comcast on a tablet.

Right now, the experience for an Internet user is heavily based on region and device. Dyn’s mission is to ensure that Internet users will experience a company like Twitter in the same way, regardless of those factors.

’We’re trying to kind of demystify the way that all works and bring it all together, and it’s the same challenges happening in emerging markets, just I think on different paces,’ York said.

Dyn relies heavily on partners, particularly regional cloud solution providers, and York said the company is actively recruiting new partners.
