News Junkies Rejoice! CNN Debuts Interactive App For The iPhone

Starting today CNN is selling an application for Apple's iPhone that provides users with live-streaming video for breaking news and the ability to watch recent video broadcasts and other on-demand content.

And for those TV reporter wannabes, CNN even offers a gateway to the iPhone's iReport function, giving viewers the ability to upload photos and video to CNN and browse user-generated content.

CNN is charging $1.99 for the software through the Apple App Store.

CNN is relatively late to the iPhone party with news applications already available from such media outlets as Time Magazine, The Financial Times and National Public Radio. And many of those other news applications are free.

But the CNN app was worth waiting for. Viewers can watch live streaming video directly from CNN.com Live and access on-demand video clips from such content categories as latest news, most popular, on TV, U.S., world, entertainment, tech, offbeat, politics and health, according to the CNN announcement.

Users can scroll through news headlines and summaries of news stories, including text and photos, and select which ones they want to read. They can follow a developing story by having CNN push story updates to their iPhone. And they also can store text news stories they want to read later offline.

Other features include customized local weather forecasts and traffic reports, the ability to search for news using key words and share news stories through Twitter, Facebook, e-mail and SMS.
