Samsung Intros Galaxy Spica Android Smartphone, But U.S. Must Wait

Like the Moment, the new Samsung Galaxy Spica runs on the Google Android operating system, giving it access to all the Google mobile services including Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, and Google Talk, as well as to applications that can be downloaded from Android Market.

At 4.5" x 2.2" x 0.5", the Galaxy Spica is a bit smaller than the Moment. The two use the same 800MHz processor, but the Galaxy Spica boasts a 3.0-megapixel digital camera vs. the Moment's 3.2-megapixel model.

The biggest feature difference appears to be the Galaxy Spica's embedded ability to watch DivX videos. Samsung said the smartphone is the first Android-powered phone to support DivX without the need to convert file formats.

The Galaxy Spica supports Bluetooth 2.1, USB 2.0, MicroUSB, and WiFi connectivity. Its external memory can reach up to 23 GBs with a Micro SD card. It also includes a 1500 mAh battery.

The Samsung Galaxy Spica is currently available in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, and is slated to be available in the Middle East and Africa (MEA). Samsung did not say whether or when the mobile device would be available in the U.S.
