iPhone App Helps You Find A Doctor In A Flash

United Healthcare has released an iPhone app called DocGPS that serves up its network of doctors, clinics, hospitals and other health care services on a new application available at Apple's App Store. Users can tailor their search to their specific UHC plan and locate nearby doctors, clinics and hospitals within the insurance carrier's network using the GPS functionality of iPhone 3G and 3GS. The app can make searches on 23 types of health care facilities and 58 types of physician specialties.

After locating a doctor or hospital, the application shows the office location on a map, provides detailed directions, and lets the user call the medical professional or facility with a single tap on the search result, according to UHC. The insurer is aiming the app at road warriors or vacationers unfamiliar with health care providers in their current location.

Those with first-generation iPhones running 2.0 software or higher can also use the app, which allows those users to search UHC's provider networks by ZIP code, or city and state.

The application is available for download at no charge from the App Store on iPhone.
