Two Billion Views A Day -- That's Some Birthday Present, YouTube

“I like turtles”

Or perhaps you watched CRN’s version of the “When I Grow Up” commercial adapted for the 2008 Channel Champions awards. Again.

Whether it’s those two videos or something else, there’s a good chance that you contributed to the more than 2 billion views per day that YouTube now handles.

It’s been five years since YouTube founders launched the first beta version of YouTube.com, the video sharing site that has become ubiquitous with watching political speeches, music videos and more.

YouTube, now owned by Google, created its own video to celebrate its fifth birthday and has launched the YouTube Five Year Channel, where people can upload their own videos to describe how the Web site has changed their lives. The channel also hosts an interactive time line containing some of the most important moments in YouTube’s history, according to a blog post by YouTube.

“It was tough to pick -- and just scratches the surface of all the amazing things that have happened on YouTube over the years,” according to the blog post. YouTube also asked some celebrities including Conan O’Brien, Vint Cerf and Katie Couric to crate playlists showcasing their favorite videos.

“Since we never could have predicted all that happened in YouTube’s first five years, we certainly can’t imagine what the future will look like,” the blog post read. “But we do know there’s a lot more to be done. For instance, we want to make it even easier for you to sort through and find the videos that matter to you.”

Now if you’ll excuse us, it’s back to more frogs jumping in slow motion.
