Not much is 100 percent known about either of Motorola's new Android-based handsets, but the Droid X's existence was finally confirmed by carrier Verizon last week, along with basic specs such as a 4.3-inch display and 720p video capture and HDMI output.

Droid X is expected to be released at a Verizon media event Wednesday, one day before Apple's iPhone 4 is first available.

Meanwhile, there's Droid 2, which appears to be another Motorola Droid handset entirely. According to the gadget blog Android and Me, which claims it has a Droid 2 in possession, Droid 2 is physically nearly the same as the first Droid, minus the directional pad on the keyboard, plus a different color on the top bezel, but still with the 3.7-inch display and 5-megapixel camera.

Android and Me reports that it's inside the Droid 2 where the real action is. The Droid 2 is said to sport a 1GHz TI OMAP 3630 processor and 512 MB of RAM -- which, if true, gives it a major performance booster over its predecessor.

Finally, Samsung has made it known it doesn't plan to sit out the flashy smartphone fight. Its Galaxy S line was unveiled in March, and it is expected to reveal a number of other Galaxy S phones at a Samsung event on June 29, for which it sent media invitations late last week.

Among the hot rumors is Galaxy S Pro, which is said to include 8.2 GB of internal storage, front-facing VGA camera, version 2.1 of Google Android, and WiMax capability, which if true means it's a 4G phone.
