Steady Stream Of Verizon iPhone Rumors Flows On

The latest rumbling comes from Boy Genius Report, which on Monday cited an unnamed source saying Apple is preparing iPhones for Verizon-friendly CDMA networking technology in contrast GSM technology used by At&T.

The report said iPhone's operating system, iOS 4, contains code that skips the need for iTunes activation, which Apple supposedly introduces before significant product launches so testers can use new devices without iTunes. "A source told BGR that the device in question is either a CDMA iPhone or a next-generation iPad," Boy Genius Report said.

One of the most popular rumors was from TrechCrunch, which predicted a Janaury launch for a Verizon iPhone, using unnamed sources. TechCrunch reported that Apple has ordered millions of CDMA chips from Qualcomm, preparing for a Verizon iPhone.

"Sources with knowledge of this entire situation have assured me that Apple has submitted orders for millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone run due in December," wrote TechCrunch contributor Steve Cheney. "This production run would likely be for a January launch, and I'd bet the phone is nearly 100% consistent with the current iPhone 4 (with a fixed internal insulator on the antenna)."

Also last week, The Wall Street Journal noted that Apple's most recent 10-Q filing with the SEC implied AT&T's iPhone exclusivity may be ending, referring to expanding its range of wireless devices and smartphones to diminish its "dependence on any single handset."
