Toshiba Releases Thrive 7 Android Tablet

The new Thrive will join the ranks of other 7-inch tablets already lining U.S. shelves, including Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab.

The Thrive 7 runs on an Android 3.2.1 Honeycomb operating system and, like its 10-inch counterpart, is fueled by Nvidia's Tegra 2 dual-core mobile processors. Also packed within the new 7-inch device are Nvidia GeForce graphics for console gaming and a built-in Gyroscope offering hands-on motion control for the latest Android games.

Like most 7-inch tablets on the market, Toshiba’s Thrive 7 touts an ultra-sleek frame for enhanced portability. The new device weighs in at under a pound, and its 7-inch frame is no more than half an inch thick.

What sets Toshiba’s Thrive 7 apart from the bevy of tablets already out there on the market, however, is its display. The new 7-incher features a 1280-by-800 hi-res multi-touch display, along with Toshiba’s Adaptive Display and Resolution+ video enhancements technology.

Toshiba also positioned this 1280x800 hi-res display as one of the new tablet’s biggest draws.

"This is a seven-inch tablet done right," said Carl Pinto, vice president of product development, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division, in a statement. "The Thrive 7-inch Tablet is the first seven-inch tablet in the U.S. market to offer a true HD display that when combined with the selection of ports, premium audio, and a better, more robust Android experience make it a great choice for on-the-go consumers looking for a no-compromise tablet."

The Thrive 7-inch also includes two HD cameras: a five megapixel camera with an LED flash for capturing pictures and video on-the-go, and a two megapixel camera on the front for video chatting.

A 16GB version of the table is available now for $379.99, along with a 32GB for $429.99. Both are available through Toshiba and Toshiba retailers; the company said the Thrive 7 is not currently available via Toshina channel partners.
