Jefferies' Misek noted that HP shares are down more than 33 percent this year, trading at their lowest levels in the past ten years.

Gartner said the PC market, as a whole, has taken a hit over the past year, as consumers are likely reserving their purchases for systems running Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 OS. Worldwide PC shipments totaled 87.5 million units in the third quarter of 2012, marking a decline of 8.3 percent compared with the third quarter of 2011.

Both Lenovo and HP, along with other major OEMs including Samsung, Dell and Acer, are slated to go to market with Windows 8-based devices at the end of the month.
