HP Slate 7 April Launch Back On Schedule After Website Error

HP's landing page for the HP Slate 7 last week said the tablet would be available in June. HP had previously said the device would be available in April.

In an email to CRN, HP media relations said the availability date on the HP Slate 7's landing page was "inaccurate" and that the company still expects the Slate 7 to be available this month in the U.S. The tablet's landing page now shows the Slate 7 will be available in April, not June.

HP first introduced the Slate 7 at Mobile World Congress in February as an affordable, consumer-focused tablet priced at $169. The 7-inch tablet is a big move for HP not only because it marks the company's return to the consumer tablet market after the failed TouchPad but also because it marks HP's first Android product.

HP released the WebOS-based TouchPad to much fanfare in 2011 but quickly discontinued the product after just six weeks and later sold off the WebOS operating system. HP has already introduced a Windows-based tablet -- the ElitePad 900 running Windows 8 -- but that product is focused on the enterprise market.

The Slate 7, which will likely compete with other low-cost miniature tablets such as the Amazon Kindle Fire and Google Nexus 7, will ship with an Android 4.1 operating system. The device will run on a dual-core 1.6GHz processor based on ARM's Cortex-A9 architecture, as well as 8 GB of storage, 1 GB of RAM and a microSD card slot for additional storage.
