Review: Dell Latitude 14 Rugged Extreme

/**/ /**/

It might not be bullet-proof, but this laptop is about as tough as they come. Dell's Latitude 14 Rugged Extreme is a secure and rugged platform for deployment in harsh environments in public-sector, construction and other verticals.

Dell has been in the rugged laptop business since around 2008, and Round Rock builds rock-solid laptops. The CRN Test Center put one of its latest through the ringer. This MIL-STD 810G, 461F and IP-65-rated device can withstand electromagnetic interference, driving rain, blowing dust and sand, continuous humidity, salty fog, high altitudes, low temperatures and shocks of all kinds. Dell also claims that it can take as many 78 drops from as high as 6 feet.

It's obvious that designers put ding protection over bulkiness on their priority list. The lid, port covers, handle and touch screen with stylus are made to work with gloved hands. The system we tested was equipped with an Intel Core i5-4300U a dual-core, four-thread processor running at 1.9GHz. System and battery performed well, as did the rugged unit overall.
