Kopin Innovates New Smart Eyewear For All Market Levels

Tech enthusiasts have heard a lot about smart hands-free gadgets in recent years, but they may not know much about the development of the actual technology behind major trends like Google Glass.

The Kopin Corp., which has been in the business of developing microdisplays for more than 25 years, is at the forefront of smart eyewear technology innovation.

"Today, this technology is becoming more and more relevant with products out there like Google Glass and others. So for the past several years, Kopin has been investing heavily in developing core technologies that will enable this market," said Ernesto C. Martinez, senior assistant to Kopin CEO Dr. John C.C. Fan.

Kopin is very clear that it is not in the business of selling solutions, but rather working on the technological side to improve smart eyewear at three different market levels: heavy industrial, light enterprise and consumer.

"Kopin is not in the business of developing end products. We are developing the core technologies that will enable these markets," Martinez said.

Martinez demoed prototypes from the three different application levels. The "Golden Eye," meant for heavy industrial applications like managing an oil rig, enables full computing and video streaming. Light enterprise glasses are less ruggedized but fully voice-controlled, ideal for working in a warehouse where continual access to a database is necessary.

Finally, at the consumer level, Kopin is "developing the world's smallest microdisplay module that can be integrated into a variety of eyewear collections," according to Martinez.
