Empatica Lifts Wearables to Healthcare Space

Wearable technology has transformed the world of mobile health applications, and now human data analytics startup Empatica is looking to empower users with real-time data collection that they can fully manage themselves.

Empatica recently launched a new all-in-one watch and ’medical-quality" wearable device, the Embrace. It’s just the latest in Empatica’s line of health watches, which provide users with streaming information accessible via customizable iPhone and Android apps.

Sensors within the wearables detect various parameters from heart rate to stress-related components, including symptoms of an oncoming seizure. Co-founder Rosalind Picard said the goal of Empatica’s latest watch is to ’give people the ability to see the data themselves, without having to have a scientist interpret it for them."

Empatica’s line of smart watches represent a new market for wearable technology, the healthcare vertical, which exists outside the more commonly tapped consumer wellness market. Empatica could play a big role in changing the lives of people with chronic health conditions.

But even with its brainy components, the watches are user-friendly.

’It’s lightweight, it lasts for over 24 hours in recording mode, and it’s simple to set up,’ said Product Manager Daniel Bender.

Once it's set-up, the watches can alert users to spikes in stress levels and other trackable symptoms. All of those alerts can be set to complete user privacy, including a vibration to the wrist as an alert.

’No one else has to be told, you can get the private signal, or if you choose, you can share it with somebody,’ Picard said. That means signals can be shared with a doctor, nurse, parent, or spouse.

Empatica’s Embrace is now up for crowdfunding on the Indiegogo website.
