Surface Pro 2: First Tablet Allowed On Super Bowl Sidelines

The New England Patriots have Rob Gronkowski. The Seattle Seahawks have Marshawn Lynch. But both teams will pack another weapon in the arsenal this Sunday: the ultra-rugged Surface Pro 2, which will make its first appearance on Super Bowl sidelines in Sunday’s face-off.

Microsoft demoed the specialized tablets, which all NFL teams utilized in the 2014 season, to CRNtv. First, there’s no point in having a tablet on the sidelines if it can’t withstand the temperatures of Lambeau Field in December. The Surface Pro 2 models the NFL uses withstand temperatures from 120 to minus-10 degrees Farenheit,. Each team received 13 tablets to use during the season, along with a climate-controlled wheeling cabinet to store and charge the devices when they’re not in use.

The tablets are meant to replace the ink-and-paper method that’s been in place for decades. Approved technology that is allowed on NFL sidelines is limited, and up until this season, coaches have relied on printouts after plays. The Surface Pro 2 shows instant replay photos of every down during the game, and allows coaches to write on and scroll between the images. All of the tablets are connected to a secure Wi-Fi network, so players can save notes and annotations.
